The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah An-Najm affirms the truth and reliability of the revelation received by the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Its opening rejects the claim that he has gone astray or speaks the message from personal desire. The account of his encounter with the mighty angel underscores the divine origin of what he conveys.

The surah then challenges the worship of Al-Lat, Al-‘Uzza, and Manat, exposing the lack of evidence behind inherited names and imagined powers. Claims about angels and intercession must be subject to Allah’s authority, rather than wishful thinking. Human desire cannot establish religious truth.

Attention then turns to moral responsibility. People are warned against treating worldly life as the full extent of their knowledge or declaring themselves spiritually pure. Allah knows who truly reveres Him. His forgiveness is vast, yet no person can transfer the burden of wrongdoing to someone else.

Teachings associated with the scriptures of Musa and Ibrahim, peace be upon them, reinforce the importance of personal effort and the final return to Allah. He gives laughter and tears, life and death, and the blessings on which humanity depends. The fate of earlier communities confirms that His warnings are serious. The closing verses ask why people respond with amusement and heedlessness instead of humble worship. The central message is to replace inherited falsehood and self-satisfied assumptions with revealed guidance, personal responsibility, and sincere prostration before the Lord of all creation.
