The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-Fajr warns against the arrogance that grows from power and the mistaken belief that wealth proves divine favour. Its opening oaths are followed by reminders of ‘Ad, Thamud, and Pharaoh. Their impressive achievements and oppressive strength did not protect them when corruption brought Allah’s judgement.

The surah then examines how people interpret their own circumstances. Prosperity is often taken as a sign of personal honour, while restricted provision is viewed as humiliation. Both conditions are tests, and neither excuses neglect of moral responsibility. What matters is how a person responds.

The treatment of vulnerable people reveals this response clearly. Failure to honour the orphan, lack of concern for feeding the poor, wrongful consumption of inheritance, and excessive love of wealth are condemned. These failings expose a heart more attached to possession than to justice or gratitude.

Scenes of the final upheaval show the arrival of a regret that can no longer repair the past. A person wishes that something had been sent ahead for the true life, but the time for preparation is over. The closing address to the peaceful soul offers a beautiful contrast: it is welcomed back to its Lord, pleased and accepted, among His servants and into His Paradise. The central message is to measure success by faith and conduct rather than prosperity. Trust in Allah, concern for others, and preparation for the Hereafter lead towards the tranquillity that possessions alone cannot provide.
