The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-Isra opens with the Prophet Muhammad’s miraculous night journey from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, peace and blessings be upon him. This opening is followed by lessons from the history of the Children of Israel, showing how obedience and corruption affect the fortunes of communities. The Quran is presented as guidance towards the straightest way.

A major part of the surah sets out the moral foundations of individual and social life. Worship belongs to Allah alone, and kindness to parents receives particular emphasis. People are called to care for relatives, the needy, and travellers, while avoiding wastefulness and miserliness. The sanctity of life, protection of orphans, honesty in trade, modest conduct, and faithfulness to commitments are also highlighted.

These instructions are joined to the warning that human beings will answer for what they hear, see, and hold in their hearts. Arrogance and careless claims are discouraged. The dignity Allah has granted humanity brings responsibility, rather than permission to behave without restraint.

The surah addresses objections to resurrection and revelation, explaining that stubborn demands for signs do not replace sincere reflection. The account of Adam and Iblis exposes the source of temptation and the need to rely on Allah. Prayer, recitation, and remembrance offer strength amid opposition. The central message is that true guidance unites sound belief with humility, disciplined worship, and concern for others. A society honours revelation when its people make these principles visible in their relationships and choices.
