The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-Ma‘un exposes conduct that contradicts belief in the final judgement. It begins with a person who rejects accountability and reveals that attitude through harsh treatment of the orphan and indifference to feeding the poor.

The surah then warns against prayer performed without sincerity. Ma’ariful Qur’an explains that the passage concerns deliberate neglect and display, the behaviour of hypocrites. It is not describing ordinary, unintended lapses of attention as though every such lapse placed a person in the same category.

The final reference to withholding assistance highlights extreme selfishness. The commentary discusses both obligatory charity and the refusal of ordinary acts of help as signs of a heart unwilling to benefit others. Religious appearance cannot conceal this moral failure from Allah.

The central message is that worship and compassion must belong together. A person who truly expects to answer before the Lord should protect vulnerable people, care about hunger, and pray with sincere commitment. The surah asks listeners to look beyond outward performance and examine the purpose behind their actions. Faith should produce generosity and responsibility, while public displays of devotion lose their meaning when accompanied by cruelty, neglect, and a refusal to fulfil the rights of those in need.
