The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-Qari‘ah gives a warning about the Day of Judgement. Its title evokes a calamity that strikes with overwhelming force, and the repeated question about it awakens attention before the surah describes what will happen.

Human beings are compared to scattered moths, while mountains become like loosened wool. These images remove the familiar signs of strength and order. People who once appeared settled and powerful will face a reality over which they have no control.

The surah then turns from the upheaval of creation to the weighing of deeds. A person whose scales are heavy will enjoy a pleasing life, while one whose scales are light faces a dreadful destination. Ma’ariful Qur’an emphasises that the worth of deeds is connected with faith, sincerity, and their true quality before Allah.

The central message is that judgement will reveal genuine value. Numbers, appearances, and worldly reputation cannot substitute for what carries weight with the Lord. The surah encourages a serious examination of belief and conduct while action is still possible. Its brevity strengthens its warning: the present world will be transformed, every person will face the consequences of their choices, and lasting success belongs to a life of sincere faith and goodness.
