The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah An-Naml presents the Quran as guidance and good news for believers who pray, give charity, and trust in the Hereafter. Its accounts and signs emphasise that knowledge, power, and prosperity should lead to gratitude towards Allah rather than pride.

The surah briefly recalls Musa’s call before turning to Dawud and Sulayman, peace be upon them. Sulayman’s understanding of birds and the speech of an ant reveals extraordinary gifts that he attributes to his Lord. The hoopoe’s report introduces the queen of Saba and her people, who worship the sun. The exchange of messages, the queen’s consultation, and her eventual recognition of the truth show worldly authority encountering a greater spiritual reality.

Other accounts recall the resistance faced by Salih and Lut. Their communities are not condemned for lacking power or prosperity, but for refusing guidance and persisting in corruption. Human plotting is set against Allah’s complete knowledge and control.

A series of questions then directs attention to creation, rain, gardens, the stability of the earth, guidance through darkness, and the answering of the distressed. These blessings challenge every claim that another being shares Allah’s divinity. The closing passages describe signs of the Last Hour, resurrection, and the different outcomes of good and evil. The central message is that the world is full of reasons to recognise Allah. True wisdom lies in responding to those signs with gratitude, humility, and willing submission, whatever one’s position or possessions.
