The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-‘Adiyat opens with a vivid picture of charging horses: their breath, the sparks struck by their movement, the dust they raise, and their entry into the midst of a gathering. The energy and loyalty displayed in this scene prepare the listener for a sharp examination of human character.

The central accusation is human ingratitude towards the Lord. A person receives life, provision, and countless forms of care, yet may respond as though these gifts are deserved or self-produced. This ingratitude becomes visible in conduct, even when it is not openly admitted.

The surah also identifies intense attachment to wealth. Love of possessions can narrow a person’s attention until accumulation matters more than thankfulness or duty. The problem is not the mere existence of material resources, but the grip they gain over the heart and the choices that follow.

The closing verses point to the resurrection of those in the graves and the exposure of what lies within hearts. Allah’s knowledge is complete, and the final disclosure will make hidden motives apparent. The central message is to examine the contrast between divine generosity and human response. Gratitude must go beyond words and influence the use of wealth, the fulfilment of responsibilities, and the direction of desire. Remembering resurrection helps free the heart from the illusion that outward success or concealed intentions can escape the Lord’s perfect knowledge.
