The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Al-Fil recalls the defeat of the army that came with elephants to destroy the Ka‘bah. Ma’ariful Qur’an relates the event to the expedition of Abraha, whose strength appeared far beyond the ability of Makkah’s people to resist.

The surah directs attention to what Allah did with the attackers’ plan. Their power did not guarantee success, and their intention to violate the Sacred House was brought to failure. Birds sent against them cast stones, and the army was reduced to a state compared with consumed and scattered vegetation.

The account is presented as a sign of Allah’s power and His protection of the Sacred House. Those who lived with the benefits of that protection were called to remember the source of their security. The event also offered reassurance that opposition to the truth is not beyond divine control.

The central message is the weakness of arrogant power before Allah. Numbers, equipment, and confident planning cannot determine an outcome independently of Him. The surah invites gratitude for protection and humility concerning human strength. It also challenges people who enjoy the honour of the Ka‘bah to recognise the Lord who preserved it and to direct their worship and trust towards Him alone.
