The Central Theme and Topic of the Surah

Surah Saba centres on gratitude for Allah’s gifts and the certainty of resurrection. Its opening praises the Lord who knows everything that enters the earth, emerges from it, descends from the sky, and rises towards it. Nothing is hidden from Him, so denial of judgement rests on a false view of His knowledge and power.

Dawud and Sulayman, peace be upon them, are presented as recipients of exceptional blessings. Their gifts are linked to the command to work gratefully. Sulayman’s death also exposes the limits of the jinn’s knowledge, showing that they do not possess independent access to the unseen.

The people of Saba provide a contrasting example. They enjoy a flourishing homeland and abundant provision, but their ingratitude leads to the loss of what they had taken for granted. Their history warns that comfort and prosperity require a thankful response, rather than complacency.

The surah also challenges the belief that wealth, children, or social rank prove closeness to Allah. On the Day of Judgement, powerful leaders and their followers argue over blame, but neither group can escape responsibility. False objects of worship offer no rescue. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is described as a bearer of good news and warning for humanity. The central lesson is to recognise blessings as a trust, use them in obedience, and judge success by faith and righteous action rather than material advantage.
