First Kalma English Translation

There is no one worthy of worship except Allah.

Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.

Explanation of the First Kalima

The First Kalima is known as Kalima Tayyab, meaning the pure or good declaration. It is the foundation of Islamic belief and expresses the basis of a Muslim’s faith: Allah alone deserves worship, and Muhammad ﷺ is His final Messenger.

These few words carry a lifelong commitment to worship Allah and follow the guidance brought by Rasulullah ﷺ.

The words “Lā ilāha illallāh” teach that nobody deserves worship except Allah. He alone is our Creator and Sustainer, and everything we have depends upon Him. A Muslim directs worship, prayer, and supplication to Allah alone, without associating any partner with Him.

This declaration reminds us that nothing in creation shares Allah’s divinity. Wealth, position, possessions, and powerful people should never become more important to us than pleasing Him. We may work, seek treatment, and receive help from others, but our ultimate trust remains in Allah, who created these means and gives them their benefit.

The words “Muḥammadur rasūlullāh” affirm that Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger of Allah. Believing in the finality of Prophethood and his message means accepting what he taught, trusting the revelation he conveyed, and following his guidance.

Our love for Rasulullah ﷺ should appear in how we worship, speak, behave, and treat other people.

The two parts of the Kalima belong together. The first teaches us whom we worship, while the second teaches us whose guidance we follow in worshipping Him. A Muslim seeks Allah’s pleasure by following the teachings and example of His Messenger ﷺ.

The First Kalima also gives direction to everyday life. Honesty in business, kindness to parents, fairness towards others, keeping promises, and avoiding wrongdoing are all ways of putting faith into practice. The Kalima should shape our choices at home, at work, and in private, as well as during prayer.

Understanding this declaration helps a believer recite it with attention and sincerity. When we say it, we remind ourselves that we belong to Allah and are accountable to Him. When we make mistakes, this belief should encourage us to repent, seek His forgiveness, and return to obedience.

The First Kalima is therefore much more than a lesson memorized in childhood. It is the foundation upon which a Muslim builds a life of faith, worship, good character, and hope in Allah’s mercy.

Virtues of the First Kalima

The virtues of the First Kalima are closely connected with its meaning: sincere belief in Allah’s oneness and acceptance of Muhammad ﷺ as His Messenger. Hadith narrations describe great rewards for the declaration of Tawheed and emphasize the importance of truthfulness, knowledge, and sincerity.

Rasulullah ﷺ described “Lā ilāha illallāh” as the best remembrance of Allah. These words express the heart of Tawheed and remind a believer that Allah alone deserves worship. This narration appears in Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 3383, where it is graded hasan.

A great virtue of sincere faith is the promise of Paradise. In Sahih Muslim 26a, Rasulullah ﷺ taught that whoever dies knowing that none is worthy of worship except Allah will enter Paradise. The narration highlights knowledge and belief, encouraging Muslims to understand the words they recite and hold firmly to their meaning.

The testimony expressed in the First Kalima is also connected with protection from the Fire. In Sahih al-Bukhari 128, Rasulullah ﷺ told Mu‘adh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه that Allah forbids the Fire for the person who sincerely testifies from the heart that none deserves worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger. This emphasizes that the declaration must be truthful and come from the heart.

The same narration contains an important lesson about responsibility. When Mu‘adh رضي الله عنه asked whether he should share this good news, Rasulullah ﷺ expressed concern that people might rely upon it and neglect their duties.

These glad tidings should therefore increase our love for Allah and willingness to obey Him, rather than become an excuse to abandon worship or continue in wrongdoing.

Remembering the meaning of the First Kalima can help us examine our intentions. Are we worshipping sincerely for Allah? Are we following the guidance of His Messenger ﷺ? Are our actions consistent with the faith we express? Reflecting on these questions makes recitation a meaningful reminder in daily life.

The First Kalima brings together a Muslim’s belief, purpose, and direction. Its words are short enough for a child to learn, yet their meaning guides a believer throughout life: worship Allah alone, follow His Messenger ﷺ, and strive to meet Allah with sincere faith.
