Dua Before Eating The First Fruit Of A New Season

Transliteration

Allahumma bārik lanā fī thamarinā, wa bārik lanā fī madīnatinā, wa bārik lanā fī ṣā‘inā, wa bārik lanā fī muddina.

English Translation

O Allah, bless our fruits, bless our city, and bless our larger and smaller measures of food and provisions.

Explanation

This is a beautiful Sunnah dua that Rasulullah ﷺ would recite whenever the first fruit of a new season was brought to him.

The Sahabah رضي الله عنهم would present the fresh seasonal fruit before the Prophet ﷺ, and he would first make this dua asking Allah to place barakah in the fruits, the city, and the people’s food and provisions.

After reciting the dua, Rasulullah ﷺ would lovingly give that fruit to one of the small children present among his family or companions. This beautiful Sunnah reflects gratitude to Allah, love for children, and the importance of sharing blessings with others.

The words “صاع” (Sā‘) and “مُدّ” (Mudd) were traditional measuring units used by the Arabs for grain, dates, and other food items. A “Mudd” was a smaller measure, while a “Sā‘” was a larger measure equal to four Mudds.

Through these words, the Prophet ﷺ taught the Ummah to ask Allah for blessings in every part of their رزق and daily provisions, whether large or small.

This dua also teaches that true goodness does not come from quantity alone. Sometimes a small amount with barakah benefits an entire family and brings peace and satisfaction, while large amounts without barakah bring stress and emptiness. A believer therefore asks Allah not only for provision, but for barakah within that provision.

The dua further reminds Muslims to turn toward Allah whenever they receive a new blessing. Whether it is the first fruit of the season, a harvest, a business profit, or any new favor from Allah, the Sunnah is to remember Allah, thank Him, and ask Him to place lasting blessings in it.
