Why Ibrahim Alaihis Salam Is Mentioned In Durood?

According to various Ulama and scholars of Islam, the mention of Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam in Durood-e-Ibrahimi carries deep meaning and is rooted in both lineage and spiritual connection.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ comes from the lineage of Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam through Ismail ‘alayhis-salam, so this durood connects them.
It also reflects continuity, as Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam established the path of Tawheed and submission to Allah, and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came to complete and perfect that same mission, which the Qur’an describes as “the way of your father Ibrahim.”
At the same time, Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam holds a unique and elevated مقام among the Prophets. He was granted the title of Khalilullah (the close friend of Allah), and scholars explain that this durood includes a subtle dua that Allah grant Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the highest مقام of closeness as well.
This was accepted, as confirmed in authentic hadith where the Prophet ﷺ is also described as Khalil-ur-Rahman. So this durood is not a comparison of rank, but a way of asking Allah to grant even greater honor to Muhammad ﷺ by referring to a مقام already known and established.
There are also special connections between Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam and this Ummah. He made the dua for a Messenger to be sent among his descendants, which was fulfilled in the coming of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
He is also the one who named this Ummah “Muslims,” as mentioned in the Qur’an.
In addition, during the night of Mi‘raj, Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam sent salam to the Ummah through the Prophet ﷺ, which further strengthens this spiritual bond.
Another important aspect is the lasting mention granted to Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam. He made the dua for a truthful and enduring mention among later generations, which Allah accepted. His name is honored across nations and religions.
In Durood, we are asking Allah that just as Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam was granted such lasting and widespread mention, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ be granted even greater and more continuous elevation—something that is already visible, as his name is mentioned daily in salah across the entire world.
Scholars also explain that Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam is specifically mentioned instead of other Prophets because of his جامع (comprehensive) virtues.
These include:
- His status as a forefather of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
- His role in naming the Ummah as Muslims
- His dua for the coming of the final Messenger ﷺ
- His مقام as Khalilullah
- His lasting mention among all nations
- The command in the Qur’an to follow his way
Because all these qualities come together uniquely in Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam, his mention in this durood becomes most fitting.
In simple terms, this durood connects the beginning and completion of the same divine mission. It is a dua that says: O Allah, the way You honored Ibrahim ‘alayhis-salam with acceptance, closeness, and lasting mention, grant even greater mercy, blessings, and elevation to Muhammad ﷺ.
