Arabic Text
اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي شَهَادَةً فِي سَبِيلِكَ، وَاجْعَلْ مَوْتِي فِي بَلَدِ رَسُولِكَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Urdu Translation
اے اللہ! مجھے اپنی راہ میں شہادت عطا فرما، اور میری موت اپنے رسول صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے شہر (مدینہ منورہ) میں مقدر فرما۔
English Translation
O Allah, bless me with martyrdom in Your cause, and decree that I die in the city of Your Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
Transliteration
Allaahumma-rzuqnee shahaadatan fee sabeelika, waj‘al mawtee fee baladi Rasoolika, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Who Made This Dua?
This dua is recorded from Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه, the second caliph of Islam. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Zaid ibn Aslam narrates from his father that Umar رضي الله عنه made this supplication.
Original source: Sahih al-Bukhari 1890
What Does This Dua Mean?
The dua brings together two requests: martyrdom in Allah’s cause and death in Madinah, the city of His Messenger ﷺ.
The opening words, “Allaahumma-rzuqnee shahaadatan fee sabeelik,” ask Allah to grant martyrdom as a blessing. The phrase fee sabeelik means “in Your cause” or “in Your path.” It connects the request to devotion to Allah and seeking His pleasure.
The second part, “waj‘al mawtee fee baladi Rasoolik,” asks Allah to decree one’s death in the Messenger’s city. Here, “the city of Your Messenger” refers to Madinah.
Together, these words express a longing for an honourable end and for one’s earthly life to end in the beloved city of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
How Could Martyrdom Happen in Madinah, a Place of Peace?
Madinah’s sacred status means its peace and sanctity must be respected. It does not mean that a person can never violate that sanctity or commit an act of violence there.
Umar’s own death illustrates how the two requests could come together. He was attacked while leading the Fajr prayer in Madinah and later died from his wounds. The account of his attack and final days appears in Sahih al-Bukhari 3700. (sunnah.com)
Allah thus granted him martyrdom and death in Madinah. A battle within the city was not necessary for both parts of his supplication to be fulfilled.
The dua contains no request for war or unrest in Madinah. It asks Allah for a personal blessing while leaving the circumstances to His wisdom.
Can Someone Receive the Reward of Martyrdom Without Dying in Battle?
Yes. A separate hadith helps explain this point. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that someone who sincerely asks Allah for martyrdom can attain the ranks of the martyrs even if they die in their bed. This is recorded in Sahih Muslim 1909. (sunnah.com)
This teaching places great importance on sincerity. A peaceful death does not prevent Allah from granting a person the rank and reward they sincerely sought.
What Can We Learn From This Dua?
One lesson we can draw is to ask Allah for His blessings even when we cannot see how they might come together. Umar رضي الله عنه asked for martyrdom and death in Madinah, entrusting their fulfilment to Allah.
The dua also encourages us to think about the end of our lives and the sincerity of our relationship with Allah. Its meaning invites a person to seek His pleasure, live faithfully, and hope for a blessed ending.
When reciting it, we can hold both hopes in our hearts: that Allah grants us the rank of the martyrs through His mercy, and that He grants us death in Madinah.
