How to perform Istikhara - Method & Dua of Istikhara (دعاء الاستخارة)

English Translation
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense فضل. For You have power and I have none, You know and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the unseen.
O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my worldly life, and the outcome of my affairs, both immediate and long-term, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and place blessing in it.
And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my worldly life, and the outcome of my affairs, both immediate and long-term, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me satisfied with it.”
What Istikhara Really Means
Istikhara is not about getting a hidden signal, a dream, or a mysterious sign. It is a direct act of turning to Allah and asking Him to choose what is best.
The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua to the companions with the same importance as teaching Qur’an. That shows how central this practice is in a believer’s life. A person is being trained to rely on Allah directly, instead of depending on others to decide for them.
The essence of this dua is simple but very deep. A person admits that Allah knows everything while he knows nothing. Allah has power while he has none. This shifts the mindset completely. Instead of trying to control everything, a person hands over the decision to Allah with trust.
The Core Message of the Dua
This dua teaches a very balanced approach to decision-making.
A person does not say, “Give me this thing.” Instead, he says, “If this is good for me, then make it happen. And if it is bad for me, then keep it away from me.”
This shows sincerity. It removes emotional bias. Sometimes a person strongly wants something that is harmful. Istikhara protects from that by asking Allah to override personal desires with what is truly better.
Another powerful part of the dua is the ending. A person asks Allah not only to give what is خير, but also to make the heart satisfied with it. This is important because sometimes the right decision does not feel easy at first. رضا (contentment) is what completes the process.
What Happens After Istikhara?
After making istikhara, the expectation should not be that a dream will come or a clear sign will appear.
The real outcome is ease or عدم رغبت (lack of inclination). A person will naturally feel drawn toward one option, or one path will start becoming easier while the other becomes difficult.
If clarity does not come immediately, the process can be repeated for several days. Over time, the heart settles and a direction becomes clear.
Even if no strong feeling develops, a person should still move forward after istikhara with trust in Allah, because the dua itself is already a request for guidance.
How to Perform Istikhara (Simple Steps)
- Pray 2 raka’ah nafl with the intention of istikhara
- After salam, recite the dua of istikhara
- When reaching “هذا الأمر”, mention your specific matter
- If you don’t know Arabic, keep the matter in your heart
- After that, observe your inclination and proceed
Istikhara is not about finding the future. It is about trusting Allah with the future.
A person does not ask, “What will happen?”. He asks, “Choose what is best for me.”
And that shift is what brings clarity, peace, and barakah in decisions.
