English Translation
O Allah, let this moon appear over us with blessings, faith, safety, and Islam, and grant us the ability to do those deeds which You love and are pleased with.
O moon, my Lord and your Lord is Allah.
Explanation and Wisdom Behind This Dua
This beautiful dua teaches a Muslim how to begin a new month with the right mindset and connection with Allah.
In Islam, the moon is not just a celestial object.
The Islamic calendar, Ramadan, Hajj, Eid, fasting, and many acts of worship are connected to the sighting of the moon. That is why the Prophet ﷺ taught us to remember Allah the moment we see the new crescent.
The dua begins by asking Allah for “yumn”, which means blessings, goodness, and prosperity. This teaches us that every new month should begin with hope for barakah, not just in wealth or worldly matters, but in faith, family, health, and time itself.
Then the dua asks for imaan (faith). A believer does not simply want another month to pass. They want their relationship with Allah to become stronger. Time is valuable only when it brings a person closer to Allah.
The words “safety and Islam” are also very deep. Safety here includes physical safety, emotional peace, protection from sins, protection from trials, and safety in one’s religion. Asking for Islam means asking Allah to keep us firm upon obedience, sincerity, and submission to Him.
One of the most powerful parts of the dua is: “Grant us the ability to do the deeds that You love and are pleased with.”
This teaches us that guidance and good deeds are only possible through Allah’s help. A person may do many actions outwardly, but true success is when Allah accepts those deeds and is pleased with them. So this dua is not only asking for good actions, but for accepted actions.
The final words: “My Lord and your Lord is Allah” are a declaration of pure Tawheed.
Before Islam, many people connected superstition, luck, and even worship with the moon and stars. This dua removes all such beliefs. The moon itself is only a creation of Allah. It has no power to benefit, harm, change destiny, or control people’s lives. Both humans and the moon are under the authority of the same Lord: Allah.
This dua also teaches humility. No matter how advanced humans become in studying the skies and planets, the believer still looks at the moon as a sign of Allah’s greatness, not as something divine itself.
