Dua to read during Tawaf from Rukn Yamani to Hajre Aswad

Transliteration

Allahumma inni as’alukal ‘afwa wal ‘aafiyata fid-dunyaa wal aakhirah.

Rabbanaa aatinaa fid-dunyaa hasanatan wa fil-aakhirati hasanatan wa qinaa ‘azaaban-naar.

English Translation

O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and the Hereafter.

Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Explanation

This beautiful dua is recited during Tawaf while walking between Rukn al-Yamani and Hajar al-Aswad, two of the most blessed points around the Kaaba. Rukn al-Yamani is the corner of the Kaaba facing Yemen, while Hajar al-Aswad is the sacred Black Stone placed in the eastern corner of the Kaaba.

The Prophet ﷺ would frequently make dua in this part of Tawaf because it is a moment filled with humility, closeness to Allah, and hope for acceptance.

The dua begins by asking Allah for “العفو” and “العافية.” “Afw” means complete forgiveness from sins, while “Aafiyah” is a very deep word that includes safety, protection, health, peace, ease, and being saved from hardships and trials in both dunya and akhirah.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that few blessings are greater than عافیت because a person who has faith, forgiveness, health, peace, and Allah’s protection possesses immense goodness even if they do not have worldly luxury.

The dua then continues with one of the most comprehensive duas in the Quran:

“Our Lord, give us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter.”

This combines every beneficial thing a believer can ask for. It includes halal provision, beneficial knowledge, righteous family, peace of heart, forgiveness, Jannah, and ultimately salvation from Hellfire. That is why this dua is so beloved and why millions of Muslims continue to recite it while circling the House of Allah during Tawaf.
