Transliteration

Allāhu akbar wa lillāhil-ḥamd,

Allāhu akbar wa lillāhil-ḥamd,

Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahū, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd,

Allāhumma ihdinī bil-hudā, wa waffiqnī bit-taqwā, waghfir lī fil-ākhirati wal-ūlā.

English Translation

Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.

Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.

There is no god except Allah alone. His is the kingdom, and His is all praise.

O Allah, guide me with true guidance, grant me the ability to live with taqwa, and forgive me in this world and in the Hereafter.

Explanation

This dua beautifully combines three powerful elements: the greatness of Allah, the declaration of His oneness, and a focused, meaningful request from the believer. It begins with Allahu Akbar, a reminder that Allah is greater than everything we are dealing with—our problems, our fears, and even our sins.

On the Day of Arafah, this mindset is essential. You are not just asking; you are first grounding yourself in the reality that the One you are asking has complete power over everything.

Then comes the declaration of La ilaha illallah. This is the core of Arafah. It’s not just a statement you repeat—it’s a renewal of your faith and your relationship with Allah. You are affirming that everything belongs to Him, and all praise returns to Him, no matter what your situation looks like.

After that, the dua becomes very focused. Instead of asking for many worldly things, it asks for three essentials: guidance, taqwa, and forgiveness.

Guidance shows you the right path, taqwa gives you the strength to stay on that path, and forgiveness cleans your past. If a person truly receives these three, their dunya and akhirah both fall into place.
