Arabic

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ، وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ، وَوَسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ، وَاغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دَارًا خَيْرًا مِنْ دَارِهِ، وَأَهْلاً خَيْرًا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ، وَزَوْجًا خَيْرًا مِنْ زَوْجِهِ، وَأَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ، وَأَعِذْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ

Transliteration

Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu, wa ‘aafihi wa‘fu ‘anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi‘ mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-mā’i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqihi minal-khatāyā kamā naqqaytath-thawbal-abyaḍa minad-danas, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannah, wa a‘idhhu min ‘adhābil-qabr wa min ‘adhābin-nār.

Urdu Translation

اے اللّٰہ! اس کی مغفرت فرما، اس پر رحم فرما، اسے عافیت عطا فرما، اور اس سے درگزر فرما۔

اس کی مہمانی کو عزت والی بنا، اس کی قبر کو کشادہ فرما۔

اسے پانی، برف اور اولوں سے دھو دے، اور اسے گناہوں سے اس طرح پاک فرما جیسے تو سفید کپڑے کو میل کچیل سے پاک فرما دیتا ہے۔

اور اسے اس کے گھر سے بہتر گھر عطا فرما، اس کے اہل سے بہتر اہل عطا فرما، اور اس کی بیوی سے بہتر بیوی عطا فرما۔

اور اسے جنت میں داخل فرما، اور اسے قبر کے عذاب اور جہنم کے عذاب سے بچا لے۔

English Translation

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him peace and pardon him.

Honor his place of rest and make his entrance spacious.

Wash him with water, snow, and ice, and cleanse him of sins just as a white garment is cleansed of dirt.

Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse.

Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Explanation

This is one of the most beautiful and comprehensive duas taught by Rasulullah ﷺ for a deceased Muslim, commonly recited in Janazah prayer and after someone passes away. Every sentence of this dua reflects mercy, compassion, and concern for the condition of the believer after death.

The dua begins with a request for forgiveness and mercy because the greatest need of a person after leaving this world is the mercy of Allah. Then it asks Allah to honor the deceased in the عالم البرزخ (the life of the grave), to make the grave spacious and peaceful instead of dark and constricted.

The words asking Allah to wash the deceased with water, snow, and ice symbolize complete purification from sins. Just as a white cloth becomes perfectly clean when washed from stains, we ask Allah to purify the soul from every sin and mistake.

The dua then asks Allah to replace everything the person left behind with something far better in the Hereafter. A better home means the homes of Jannah. Better family and companionship mean eternal righteous company and the pleasures of Paradise.

Finally, the dua ends by asking protection from the punishment of the grave and the Fire, because true success after death is safety from punishment and entry into Jannah.

This dua teaches Muslims that death is not the end. It is the beginning of the journey toward the Hereafter, and the greatest gift we can give a deceased loved one is sincere dua asking Allah for mercy, forgiveness, and eternal peace.
