The Main Themes and Topics Covered in This Juzz/Para of the Holy Quran

Para 10, known as Wa’lamoo, begins with rules concerning the distribution of battle gains. The surrounding passages recall Badr and teach believers to remain steadfast, remember Allah, and avoid disputes that weaken their unity.

Pride and showing off are condemned. Surah Al-Anfal also addresses treaties, betrayal, preparedness, and the treatment of prisoners.

Muslims are instructed to respond to a genuine inclination towards peace with peace and reliance upon Allah. The surah closes by discussing the bonds and responsibilities among believers, including emigrants and those who supported them.

Surah At-Tawbah opens with declarations concerning treaties with particular groups of Arabian polytheists. Those who have honoured their agreements are expressly distinguished from those who have broken them.

The verses also require protection and safe escort for a person seeking to hear Allah’s message. The para discusses the sanctity of the Sacred Mosque and challenges the idea that outward service alone equals sincere faith and sacrifice.

It recalls Hunayn, when confidence in large numbers gave way to difficulty before Allah granted help. A substantial section exposes hypocrisy during the call to the Tabuk expedition.

Excuses, reluctance to contribute, and attempts to discourage others reveal weaknesses hidden beneath religious claims. By contrast, sincere believers offer their lives and wealth in obedience.

The para identifies the recognised categories of zakat recipients and condemns hoarding wealth without meeting its obligations. It also warns against mocking religion, breaking promises, and finding fault with sincere charitable contributions, whether large or small.

The relationship between believing men and women is described through mutual support in promoting good, preventing wrongdoing, prayer, and zakat. They are promised Allah’s mercy and lasting reward.

The closing passages distinguish genuine inability to join an expedition from blameworthy avoidance by those with sufficient means. Throughout, sincerity is measured through conduct, loyalty, generosity, and willingness to fulfil responsibilities.

Selected tafsir references (Ma’ariful Qur’an): 8:41; 8:61; 9:1; 9:60.
